Week of the Young Child 2009

The Week of the Young Child (April 19-25, 2009) celebration was established so communities can come together to meet the needs of young children and their families. For the past few years, the Institute for Child Development and Family Relations (ICDFR) has sponsored events on campus to draw attention to the needs of the children in our community. This year, we expanded our outreach into the communities we serve.

The theme for Week of the Young Child was Early Childhood Literacy. Most of us are aware of how important books were to us as children, how they helped shape our futures and brought us CSUSB. Family members and early caregivers must build a foundation for literacy by talking and reading daily to infants and toddlers.

To support families in our community that have little or no access to books for their children the Institute held a book drive. The goal of our book drive was to collect as many children’s books as possible, and it was a huge success! We were able to collect over 1,000 new and used books from the campus and the community. The Norman F. Feldheym Central Library donated roughly 300 children’s books; Ms. Wendy Zin, a publisher on campus, donated 96 brand new children’s book sets with nightlights; sororities and fraternities on campus raised money to buy 93 brand new children’s books; and over 500 children’s books were collected from donation boxes located throughout campus. The books are going to be donated to families throughout the community who have few books of their own. See the photo below for a picture of a few of the books from our book drive!
In addition to our book drive, we spent the week in our communities. We spent two days at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) and one day at the Norman F. Feldheym Central Library handing out information on parenting programs offered at Cal State San Bernardino (i.e., CUIDAR), community resources such as Children’s Network and child development resources. See the photo below for one of our visits to ARMC.

Four days out of the week we partook in campus outreach. We spent time in the College of Education and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Our goal was to provide information to interested students and campus professionals that work with young children on ICDFR programs and services, community resources and, various child development resources.
